Sony Trademarks “P.S. Thanks”

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. filed a trademark this week for the words “P.S. Thanks” (of course that should be PlayStation Thanks). Now, it might seem like they are trying to trademark the e-mail friendly signature of every message sent out from their company, but reading in the fine print on the trademark we see that it is geared towards an actual service or program:
“Entertainment services, namely, incentive rewards programs geared toward quantifying, identifying, and motivating the top consumer base with the goal of promotion and sale of video game hardware and software.”
Is this incentive program from Sony going to jump into the mix and battle it out for superiority with Club Nintendo? I’m thinking we’ll see a rewards program from Sony in the future (the trademark doesn’t list a start date), with the best of the best PlayStation 3 owners getting top billing, quite possibly their own version of a PlayStation Magazine, and an invite to battle it out in cosplay gear on the fanboy battlefield versus Nintendo and Microsoft…..
[UPDATE] - Playstation Universe just got a response from Sony in regards to the “P.S. Thanks” trademark filing. Here is what Sony had to say:
“We have a long history of creating unique loyalty programs such as PlayStation Underground, which started with the original PlayStation and has evolved into the Gamer Advisory Panel. We continue to look for ways to expand this program and we are evaluating new naming conventions for this evolution, which is why we filed a trademark for PlayStation Thanks.”
This statement doesn’t really go one way or the other, with the verdict still being out on whether we’ll see a PS Thanks member program from Sony. They might have just filed the trademark to lock up the name, or it could be that it is something in the job works.
